What is Creosote?
Creosote is the
portion of chemical products obtained by the distillation of
a tar that remains heavier than water, and is interestingly notably
useful for its antiseptic and preservative properties
(Wikipedia). It is generally found inside of chimney flues when wood or coal
burns incompletely. Creosote has a very strong, acrid odor which is generally
much worse in wet weather, or in the summer when the chimney is less
operational in drawing the odor up the chimney. It can penetrate the surface of
the chimney lining, and due to this the odor may persist even after it is
cleaned. It is advised to try and disconnect the stove pipe and plugging the
thimble (the hole in the chimney) with a metal cap during the summer, as this
may help with keeping the odor out of the house. Also try and invest in a
chimney cap to assist with keeping the rain out of the flue.
